Northcutt Brothers Lumber & Building Supply was built and opened n 1954 by Lyte, Hallis, and D.V. Northcutt, descendants of Gen. Adrian Northcutt, one of the original founders of Grundy County. The Northcutts harvested their own timber from thousands of acres that they owned or leased. This timber was cut at a sawmill on this property that burned soon after the Northcutt brothers created the building supply business.
The building supply business sold a complete line of home products, including lumber, hardware and feed. Trusses for chicken houses, handles and other items were made here. They also manufactured windows in the large wood-working section of the building. Among their manufactured products were church pews complete with the racks for Bibles, song books and communion cups. Patterns for all of these items were discovered in the building at the time renovations began, as well as some ‘new’ windows from the 1950s that had never been used.
In the 1990s, Dr. Joe Gray purchased the building from Lyte Northcutt. Dr. Gray had a number of antique collections, including over 300 antique clocks, which he stored in the building. Joe Gray, Jr. acquired the property in 2019 from his parents’ estate and renovated the building.
The three Northcutt brothers had a total of eight children. Some of the adult Northcutt children who observed the building’s renovation were active in advising as to the historical use of the structure, describing how it originally appeared, and relating stories of they grew up working and playing in the old building. Today, the building finds new life as the Greeter Falls Lodge, and is owned and managed by the Gray family as a short-term rental, hosting guests from around the world.
